Lancaster's history begins with an encounter between two passionate and visionary men: Georges Wurz, an important industrialist, and Dr Eugène Frezzatti, a highly qualified chemist and expert on cosmetics, who worked for major brands in the United States. Back in 1946, the two men have the genius to anticipate the needs of women who, after the long and devastating war, are daring to once again start taking care of themselves and their skin. They engage wholeheartedly in a project that is incredibly innovative for the era: the design of a range of care products especially for the skin's needs, which they call Lancaster.

The two men set up their laboratory in the Boulevard Princesse Grace, in Monaco. And this address turns out to be a very good omen: Princess Grace Kelly soon becomes one of their most loyal and enthusiastic ambassadors. Obsessed with the goal of slowing down the signs of aging in women's skin and enabling their beauty to shine throughout their lives, they enjoy spectacular success right from the start with their “Crème Embryonnaire pour la nuit”, followed by “Ligne Roset", which meets with the same enthusiasm

In the 1960s, beauty is no longer a matter of one's image in society, but of personal identity. Women increasingly aspire to greater freedom in their everyday lives. Skirts get shorter and shirts get tighter, allowing the body to be unveiled in all its glory. Wishing to show themselves to the best advantage, women become emancipated.

In 1965, Lancaster could not have hoped for a more opportune moment to open its first Beauty School. This institute in the prestigious rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris houses a spa, a boutique, and a school of aesthetics.

Appointed
Supplier
to Her Serene Highness Grace of Monaco”

The 1970s are witness to the liberation of women, exposure of the body and the spawning of feminism.

It's the golden age of the French Riviera, and the brand's history becomes forever entwined with the Rock of Monaco and the sunny skies that prevail above it: from henceforth, Lancaster is synonymous with a new way of life, of sun, sensuality and hedonism.

And Monaco is synonymous with Grace Kelly… The brand develops a range of products specially designed for Princess Grace of Monaco, the “Ligne Princière”, with products adorned in princely colors of white and gold and bearing a royal seal declaring Lancaster the "Appointed Supplier to Her Serene Highness Grace of Monaco”.

When Lancaster launches its first sun protection range in 1971, it has the audacity to select orange instead of the traditional brown, which is to become its emblem. While the feminist movement is in full swing, body shape and being thin become an obsession. Tanning is all the rage. It's the age of "getting a tan at any price". Women coat themselves in oils and lotions, and over-expose themselves to the sun.

The first sun protection cream on the market has a base of beta-carotene. It's effective, but not very stable. Lancaster takes an innovative approach to sunbathing, with "sans soleil" fake tan and “visage bronzé” make-up, which are still among its best-sellers today.

A trailblazer then as now, and committed to creating sun protection products more refined and sophisticated than its competitors, the company succeeds in standing out from the crowd with a range of unique products for use before, during and after sunbathing.

All these trendsetting innovations enable Lancaster to quickly evolve into the undisputed specialist in cosmetics, and the benchmark brand in the volatile sun protection market.

At the same time, the company continues to establish its position in the field of cosmetic care, and revolutionizes the market by introducing retinol in its products for the first time, in 1976.

While still favoring the color of the classic tan, at the dawn of the 1980s Lancaster has the foresight to anticipate the trend toward greater skin protection, by developing the idea of "less exposure, more tan", and by refining the protection factors. The company initiates a positive discussion focussing less on the risks of exposure to the sun and more on the benefits of this pastime and on learning about protection and "better tanning". Its principal innovations in this approach include the launch of Héliotan Tan Deepener in 1986, which triggers a more rapid, more intense tanning reaction. Quite simply, Lancaster was the first to offer tan boosters...

Let's take a closer look at the mini-revolution triggered by Héliotan. This complex prepares the skin for and stimulates more intense tanning than beta-carotene, and promotes the transformation of tyrosine in order to create more melanin and deepen the color of the user's tan. To further improve its efficacy, in 1991 it was reformulated and combined with biomelanin, natural melanin from biological sources. With identical properties to human skin, it acts as a powerful natural protector against free radicals. It acts as a decoy and becomes a filter, while simultaneously imparting color to the epidermis.

Continuing innovations...

Continuing innovations…
In 1993, Lancaster introduces oxygen in cosmetics for the first time, with its “Skin Oxygen” range.

Later, in 1997, the Lancaster laboratories are the first to launch a protection ratio of 1/3 UVA/UVB in all their sun care products, and to discover tan activator, a powerfully restorative after-sun formula that prolongs tanning from 50 to 80% after exposure to the sun. The secret to this success lay in combining Héliotan with Héliosome, which helps to repair damage caused by the sun.

Lancaster's innovations continue to enjoy success in both skincare and sun protection.

Its goal? To offer women the best protection and repair for their skin, and to reveal their youthful glow 365 days a year, whatever their age, location and lifestyle. Say hello to the invention of Elixir 365! A daily routine able to restore the skin's optimum function day in, day out, for skin that reveals its original youthfulness. For twelve years now, the 365 formula has been gaining scientific patents and awards for its performance. Inspired by recent discoveries in the field of epigenetics, the new generation of 365 launched in 2011 promises to go even further: for the first time, a serum targets 100% of the factors of aging. It does this via three key actions: repairing damaged skin DNA, preventing the appearance of signs of aging, and prolonging cell longevity. This unprecedented technology reveals the original glow of youthful cells.

SUN PROTECTION : The undisputed leaders of sun products in Europe, the Lancaster laboratories have devoted their research to decoding the solar spectrum and understanding its impact on the skin. In so doing, they discovered that besides UV rays, rays of infrared and visible light penetrate the deepest layers of the skin, accelerating premature aging. In response, they launch infrared protection onto the market in 2008, followed by Full Light technology in 2016. After many years of intensive research, this last innovation, still without precedent, prevents the harmful effects of 100% of all solar radiation (UVA, UVB, visible light and infrared).
